Your federal student loan servicer is a third-party company that manages your student loans, answers questions, and collects student loan payments on behalf of the U.S. Department of Education. When you borrow a federal student loan, the U.S. Department of Education automatically assigns you a student loan servicer. Your student loan servicer is different than your lender because student loan servicers don’t lend money. Rather, student loan servicers act as customer service for your student loans.

Find out who’s your federal student loan servicer
If you have federal student loans, the process to find out who’s your student loan servicer is relatively easy. If you’re unsure who’s your student loan servicer, you’re not alone.
Here are two easy options to figure out your student loan servicer:
- Option 1: Log in to Federal Student Aid (FSA) with your FSA ID. Scroll to the “My Loan Servicers” section.
- Option 2: Call the Federal Student Aid Information Center (FSAIC) at 1-800-433-3243.
Once you identify your student loan servicer, you can contact your student loan servicer directly. If you don’t have an account, set up an account online. You can create a login and password directly through your student loan servicer’s website. You’ll want to provide your updated contact information and enroll in autopay, which will deduct your monthly student loan payment directly from your bank account. Most lenders offer a 0.25% interest rate discount on your student loans when you enroll in autopay.
If your student loans get transferred
After you borrow a student loan and your student loan disburses, the U.S. Department of Education will assign you a student loan servicer. Typically, you can’t change your student loan servicer unless you refinance student loans.
During the course of your student loan repayment, however, it’s possible that the U.S. Department of Education could transfer your federal student loans to new student loan servicer. Your federal student loans could get transferred to a new student loan servicer for several reasons. For example, if you enroll in public service loan forgiveness, you could get assigned a new student loan servicer that focuses exclusively on servicing student loans for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. Alternatively, the U.S. Department of Education may change student loan servicers over time, which means your student loans could get reassigned to a new servicer.
There’s no guarantee that your student loans will be transferred. However, many student loan borrowers get a student loan servicer several times when they repay student loans.
Here are important things to know when your student loans get transferred:
- Your student loan interest rate won’t change
- Your student loan terms won’t change
- You will be notified in writing if your student loan servicer changes
- You should update your contact information with your new student loan servicer
- You will make monthly student loan payments to your new servicer
When to contact your student loan servicer
Keeping in regular contact with your student loan servicer can be a smart strategy to manage student loan repayment. You should contact your student loan servicer as often as you need to, and especially when you:
- Need to update your contact information (including your name, address, phone number or email address) changes;
- Want to enroll in an income-driven repayment plan, including IBR, PAYE, REPAYE or ICR.
- Decide to enter student loan forbearance or student loan deferment;
- Are having issues with student loan payments;
- Have questions about your student loan bill;
- Want to learn more about the best options for student loan forgiveness;
- Need to file a complaint against your student loan servicer.
How to file a complaint against your student loan servicer
If you want to file a complaint against your student loan servicer, you have several options. First, you can contact your student loan servicer by phone, email, fax or by mail. Second, many student loan servicers have a student loan ombudsman who handles complaints from student loan borrowers. Contact the student loan ombudsman at your student loan servicer.
You can also file a complaint against your student loan servicers through several independent offices within the state or federal government, including:
- Consumer Financial Protection Bureau
- Your state consumer protection office
- Federal Student Aid
- Your state attorney general
- Your congressional representative
You should maintain written communication with your student loan servicer, including your student loan statements, records of communication with customer service, and all other correspondence.
